The largemouth bass is a freshwater fish and has a scientific name of Micropterus salmoides. It is also known as bigmouth or bucket mouth, because it can open very wide to accommodate it's prey. They prefer warm water and can be found in most any pond that has enough food source for them. Farm ponds are likely homes to largemouth and also ponds that are on golf courses. You can find them in some rivers as well but ponds and warm water lakes are their preferred waters.
Largemouth are usually caught and released back to the water where they came from and the average size is anywhere from 1 pound to 3 pounds. If a bass fisherman catches a 5 pounder, it's a really good day and if he lands a 10 pounder, than it's bragging time! Every once in a while a really big bass is caught that weighs in at 20 or more pounds and over 30 inches in length. These are the trophy sized bass that some people spend a lifetime trying to catch.
You don't have to a trophy hunter to have an exciting time fishing for the largemouth. Even an average sized fish can surprise you with it's ferocious hit and pulling power when it finds out it's hooked. If you manage to find a "new" or "previously unknown" bass pond, and it produces some nice size fish, then be very selective who you tell. Whoever you decide to let in on the location should know that each largemouth is to be released and also that he or she is not to bring others to the spot. This may sound mean but what can happen is everyone soon hears that there are big bass being caught and all of a sudden your "secret" pond or lake area is taken over by folks you don't even know. To make matters worse, they may be catching the big fish and taking them home to be mounted to put on the wall. The more big fish taken out, the faster the good fishing goes downhill. Sure, there may be plenty of small ones left, but it's the really big bass that will keep producing the offspring that will continue to grow to be really big largemouth.
These fish are extremely fun to catch. You may even find yourself catching the same one each time you visit your favorite spot. They will attack a wide variety of offerings, on top of the water or underneath, especially if they are near their spawning bed. You can fish for them day or night and if everyone acts accordingly, the largemouth will be around for a long time to provide endless hours of fun and excitement for all bass fishing enthusiasts!
